Child-Centred Play Therapy

Play Therapy is an evidence-based form of counselling for children. Children's brains are different to adult brains in that they aren't as developed and children don't always have the ability to put words to their experience, and instead communicate through behaviour and play. We view play as a child's primary language.

Play Therapy meets children where they are at developmentally and provides a safe space to work through any worries or concerns that may be present. In Child-Centred Play Therapy, the child is free to guide the play, and the therapist provides a safe and trusting environment for the child to express and explore. The relationship built between child and therapist is an essential component of play therapy.

For children who have experienced early childhood trauma, these experiences are often stored in the subconscious which can't be accessed using talk therapy. Play Therapy allows children to process these experiences and gain mastery and control over these, thus reducing the impact on their lives and relationships.

Through play, children often reveal their inner thoughts, feelings, experiences and worries, giving the therapist valuable insight into the child and allowing for appropriate support and strategies to be put in place.

Children have access to a range of toys and resources where they can let out big feelings and learn to manage these, with the support of the therapist.

Child-Centered Play Therapy is most appropriate from ages 2-10. Play Therapy can be a long process as it takes time to build a trusting relationship and really dig deep into what might be happening for your child internally. We recommend booking sessions in blocks of at least 5, as consistency in Play Therapy is key to making the most progress.
